Each day will include a number of afternoon 2.5 hour parallel workshops on related technologies and topics. There will also be optional surgery sessions for those who wish to consult with TEI@Oxford about their particular projects or encoding issues. There will also be guest lectures from Digital Humanities experts familiar with the TEI talking about their own projects.

As you can only attend one workshop each afternoon, there will be a survey closer to the workshop for you to rank your workshop preferences. While we cannot guarantee attendance at any particular workshop we will use your stated preferences from this later survey to attempt to accommodate your first choice.

1. Workshop 1: Document Analysis and Modelling

Taught by: Peter Stokes; King's College London

Any TEI project requires analysis and modelling of your texts or documents, including a clear understanding of your desired outcome. This course will provide an overview of some of the principles and methods of that process. There will be practical exercises and examples from 'real life' projects, focussing on historical documents.

2. Workshop 2: TEI for Language Resources

Taught by: Piotr Bański; University of Warsaw

This workshop will give you an introduction to the use of TEI for language resources touching on such as topics as creation of corpora and lexica, as well as feature structure representation and metadata issues.

3. Workshop 3: Publishing TEI XML using XSLT

Taught by: Sebastian Rahtz; University of Oxford

This course will provide an overview of the eXtensible Stylesheet Language for Transformation (including version 2.0), and how to use XSLT to transform your TEI documents to produce other formats like XHTML for publication. There will be practical exercises that teach some of the overall concepts of XSLT.

4. Workshop 4: TEI in Libraries: Encoding Best Practices and Workflow

Taught by: Michelle Dalmau; Digital Projects & Usability Librarian Indiana University Digital Library Program

Academic libraries undertake a range of electronic text projects, from mass digitization efforts to scholarly encoding projects. This workshop, focusing on TEI, will introduce library text encoding best practices for various levels of encoding, related metadata standards, encoding workflows (for in-house and outsourced encoding), and training strategies and challenges.

5. Workshop 5: Creating a TEI-based Website with the eXist XML database;

Taught by: Joseph Wicentowski; Office of the Historian, U.S. Department of State

Want to learn essential tools for creating intuitive websites to display, search, analyze, and transform your TEI documents into HTML, PDF, and ePub? This workshop introduces eXist, a free, open-source server that turns your TEI documents into a powerful database. Learn from the creator of history.state.gov, a TEI-rich website entirely driven by eXist.

6. Workshop 6:Transcribing documents, transcribing the process

Taught by: Elena Pierazzo; King's College London

The workshop will introduce a new set of elements to encode manuscripts from a documentary and genetic point of view. It will include an introduction to the elements and a ‘hands-on’ session where the participants will be able to use the new elements by encoding material provided by the instructor.

7. Surgery Consultations

Advice by: TEI@Oxford

These are a chance for those who do not wish to attend either of the other two workshops to book an (up to 30 minute) consultation with some of the TEI@Oxford team. This can be used to discuss your project work or even some aspect of the TEI that you are confused about or the summer school doesn't have time to cover.
